Instrument Rating — Helicopter
The instrument rating opens up everything: night IFR, weather flying, and all the commercial work that requires more than 50 NM at night. The training is rigorous, the proficiency standards are tight, and the discipline carries over to every flight you make afterward.
FAR 61.65 — Aeronautical Experience
Helicopter figures, from § 61.65(e). Paragraph (d) is the airplane rule and reads almost identically — two of its numbers are different, and using them is the single most common way this requirement gets taught wrong.
- 50 hours cross-country PIC — at least 10 hours in helicopters
- 40 hours actual or simulated instrument, of which 15 hours must be with an authorized instructor who holds an instrument-helicopter rating. Those 15 hours are part of the 40, not an additional block on top of it.
- 3 hours instrument flight training in a helicopter from an authorized instructor within the 2 calendar months before the date of the practical test
- One IFR cross-country with an authorized instructor, filed
IFR, of at least 100 NM along airways or ATC-directed routing,
including:
- An instrument approach at each airport
- Three different kinds of approaches with use of navigation systems
- Knowledge test (helicopter-specific instrument exam)
100 NM, not 250. The 250 NM cross-country is § 61.65(d)(2)(ii)(A), which applies to the instrument-airplane rating. The helicopter provision at § 61.65(e)(2)(ii)(A) is 100 NM. Read § 61.65 — verified 2026-09-03 against eCFR title 14, issue date 2026-08-31.

Partial panel, lost comm, engine failure in IMC, constant-attitude autorotation, and airframe icing.

Approach segments, VOR/DME, ILS, RNAV/LPV, LDA/SDF/BC, radar approaches, and helicopter visibility reduction.
6. Clearances, Departure & Enroute
CRAFT, void times, ODP/SID, MEA/MRA/MOCA/MSA/OROCA, COP, VFR-on-top, ARTCC services.
7. Arrivals & Advanced Maneuvers
STARs, descend-via, vertical nav math, steep turns, BANK PITCH POWER recovery, partial panel, IFR autorotation.
8. Instruments & Systems
Pitot-static deep dive, blockage scenarios, IAS/CAS/EAS/TAS, gyros, magnetic compass errors, GRABCARD, ADS-B.
